Chordates, (tunicates) are found attached by means of stalks or fine
filaments to rocks, shells, etc. The free unattached end has an opening, the buccal or
inhalent siphon, while the atrial or exhalent siphon is usually a little distance away
along the side of the animal. The beating of the ciliated pharyngeal epithelium produces a
strong current of water which passes out throught the slits into the atrial cavity ,,,,
Planktonic organisns are filtered from the flow , filtration is very efficient; particles
down to a few microns can be retained and up to 200 liters of water an hour may be
filtered by large species. |
